What anime show am i thinking of?

i saw this show in april of 2006, there was one scene where a man was fighting like 2 or 3 guys on like a peer. he was older and had a sword and straw hat. i believe after he fought the guys he went into a cave where a girl was being held captive. and im not sure if she died or was just really hurt but the show was graphic. i really want to know what series or movie this was if anyone could help it would be greatly appriciated
